Consent
and confidentiality in genetic practice
This 39-page report of the Joint Committee on Medical Genetics, published
in April 2006, is sub-titled "Guidance on genetic testing and sharing
genetic information". It is a response to requests from genetics
professionals for clarification on issues of consent and confidentiality
in general practice, although it is intended that its discussions and
recommendations will be of value to all specialities.The report is due
for review in June 2008.

and the implementation of the 1997 Caldicott Report.
Confidentiality
: RCN guidance for occupational health nurses
'Confidentiality: RCN guidance for occupational health nurses' was published
by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in October 2003. This guidance covers;
the law and you; ownership of confidential records; access to confidential
records; disclosure of confidential information; disclosure in the public
interest; serious risk to public health and prevention of serious crime;
whistleblowing; consent to disclosure; statutory provisions; and access
to information for medical audit or research.

This document of April 2004, produced for doctors by the General Medical
Council (GMC) of the UK, provides guidance on the patient's right to confidentiality.
It addresses standards of practice and covers those varied medical and
legal circumstances which necessitate disclosure of personal patient information.
BMA
: access to health records by patients
This document published by the British Medical Association, provides guidance
for doctors on access to health records under the Data Protection Act
1998, and on access to the health records of deceased patients under the
Access to Health Records Act 1990, or the Access to Health Records (Northern
Ireland) Order 1993. Published in June 2000 and revised in December 2002,
this document outlines what records are covered, who can apply for access,
exemptions, fees and charging. This document is also available in PDF
format (which requires the Adobe Acrobat reader software).
